Steve Voellmecke
Head Coach
Steve Voellmecke was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH and has been involved with the sport of diving for nearly 35 years – first as a diver, now as a coach, judge and volunteer. Steve graduated from Moeller High School in 1984 and went on to earn his degree in Business Management from Xavier University in 1988. He was a member of the XU Swimming and Diving Team all four years and was team captain his senior year.
Steve is a Life Member of USA Diving; a Trustee of the United States Diving Foundation;Treasurer of The United States Professional Diving Coaches Association and is on the Executive Board for the ambitious Aquatic Training Center project here in Cincinnati. Steve was USA Team Leader for the 2000 FINA World Cup in Sydney, Australia and the 1996 Can-Am-Mex J.O. International Meet in Winnipeg, Canada. He was chosen “first alternate” to be the USA Diving Team Leader for the 2000 Olympic Games. Steve also was CO-Meet Director for the memorable and highly successful 1996 U.S. National Diving Championships held at Miami University in Oxford, OH.
In 1998, Steve was presented with the prestigious “WHOSAM” Award given annually to the Diving Coach who “demonstrates commitment to excellence and dedication to the highest physical, mental and spiritual ideals.” This award is presented by Dr. Sammy Lee M.D. – 1948 and 1952 Olympic Gold Medalist — and the person responsible for introducing “The Sammy” Sport Towel to the diving world!
Steve is also a highly respected diving judge. He is F.I.N.A. (international) certified; was the only judge selected to judge both the 2008 AND 2012 United States Olympic Diving Trials; has judged the NCAA Championships (2007 – 2014); several international diving competitions around the world as well as many Collegiate Championships including the Big 10, SEC and PAC-12 Conferences. In addition, Steve has served as referee and judge at countless Summer League Diving Meets all across the Greater Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky area over the past 30 years.
Although Steve has coached divers at the State, National and International Levels, his first love is teaching diving at the Grassroots Level. He has coached the summer diving team at The
Indian Hill Club since 1985 (30 years and counting!) and helped to design the diving well at the Club’s spectacular new pool built in 2008.
Steve’s “real job” is Owner and President of Springboards and More (A Division of DIVE Cincinnati, Inc.) – the perennial largest Dealer of Duraflex Diving Equipment in the United States and the Preferred Equipment Supplier to USA Diving.
Steve lives in Loveland, OH with his twins Aidan and Simone – his very active and involved twins who were born on Valentine’s Day 2001. The other member of the Voellmecke Family is “Pennie Lane” – a Yellow Labrador Retriever who will do just about anything for a Frozen Peanut Butter-filled Kong!

Dive Team
by techadminWahoos Dive Team
The Indian Hill Club “Wahoo” Dive Team strives to provide all team members, regardless of ability or previous experience, the opportunity to develop diving skills and a strong sense of personal achievement. This year however we may not be able to accommodate some of our younger and inexperienced divers because of the restrictions and limitations on spotting. If you believe your child will be in this group please contact Steve or Shellie prior to registering your child.
Summer diving provides a unique opportunity for children to participate as team members and contribute to the team’s overall success. Divers will not only learn new dives and skills but more importantly, they will learn good sportsmanship, make new friends, and most of all — HAVE FUN!
Dive Practices are:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 9a – 11a
- Wednesday from 6p – 8p
- Fridays from 10a – 12p

One Of A Kind Dive Well
by techadminINDIAN HILL CLUB DIVING WELL
By Steve Voellmecke — IHC Diving Coach
At The Indian Hill Club, we like to say that “Every Day is a GREAT Day for Diving”! The Wahoo Diving Team has enjoyed unparalleled success over the past three decades in the Seven Hills League and one reason for that success is the diving facility at which we have the privilege of training on a daily basis during the summer season.
When you enter the IHC — the first thing that catches your eye is the diving well — a “one of a kind” facility that is the finest in the entire Tri-State area. We are the ONLY Summer Swim Club within 100 miles (or more) that has a concrete pedestal on which two Duraflex Short Stands with “top of the line” Maxiflex Model B “Cheeseboards” are installed. All aspects of our diving well meet or exceed the international standards for a competitive 1 Meter Diving Board.
The size of the IHC diving pedestal is unusual in that it is larger than any found at any Division 1 College in every state that touches Ohio and beyond — with the possible exception of the Ohio State University 3 Meter Pedestal which holds THREE diving boards.
Although 1 Meter Diving is not an Olympic Event, it is a contested event at both The World Championships and The World Cup. All international diving events (including the Olympic Games) are required to be held on Competition Model 16′ Maxiflex Model B “Cheeseboards” attached to Duraflex “Short Stands” that are mounted to concrete pedestals — the very same equipment and set-up that we have at The Indian Hill Club. In theory, the IHC could host the 1 Meter Event for The World Championships!
The large diving pedestal is very versatile as well. It has been used for many other things over the years including Wahoo Swim and Dive Team Photos; a Stage for both Awards’ Ceremonies and musical acts that perform at parties and the scene of countless memories made over the years.
We are very proud of our Wahoo Diving Heritage at the IHC and look to continue our tradition of excellence for many years to come. LET’S DIVE!

Swim Team FAQ
by techadminSwim Team FAQs
Are practices held on days of the meet?
Yes, regular morning practice will be held on day of a meet.
What are the procedures for a meet?
- Coaches will choose swimmers for each event according to their times and the needs of the team.
- The meet line-up will be posted at the Thursday practice before the meet.
- Swimmers who must miss practice the morning of a meet, but wish to swim in the meet, must inform the Head Coach beforehand.
- All swimmers 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at meets.
- Parents of 8 and under team members must make certain that their swimmers are with their group or Parent Helper OR are with you at all times during the meet. Meets can be very confusing for the younger swimmers.
What is the order of events at a meet?
Boys in each age group swim first, followed by girls of that age group. Youngest age to oldest in each event.
Event Order and Numbering:
- 1-10 All medley relays
- 79-80 6 and under 25 Freestyle
- 11-20 All individual short (25 meter) Freestyle
- 21-30 Butterfly
- 81-82 6 and under 25 meter Backstroke
- 31-40 Backstroke
- 41-50 Freestyle
- 51-60 Breaststroke
- 61-62 8 and under Freestyle Relay
- 63-70 All Individual Medleys
- 71-78 All Freestyle Relays
Where do I get team suits?
The team suit is optional. They can be ordered from Swimville. We will have a suit fitting at our registration if you would like to order at that time. Alternatively, you can visit their store at 90 Alexandria Pike Fort Thomas, KY. Their phone number is (859) 441-7946. Please contact Jessica or Lisa with questions.
Some of the boys prefer “jammers” while others prefer “briefs.” Either is fine. Photos of each are available on-line.
What if the weather is bad?
If it is pouring rain and/or there is lightening, practice will be cancelled. If you are unsure, please call the Club at 561-6130. The manager and coaches will make the decision. Meets may be delayed, but rarely cancelled due to the weather. Always arrive on time unless you hear otherwise from the coaches or staff. Remember to sign up for text notifications!
When do I arrive for the meets?
The coaches will tell your children at practice. You will also receive an email with meet instructions each week in case your children do not tell you or remember.
How long do meets last?
Good question! Meets start at 6:30 p.m. and usually end by 9.00 to 10:00 p.m. If we swim against large teams, or have a weather delay, the meet can last longer. Occasionally a meet will end earlier than stated above, but don’t count on it.
Do I need to be a good swimmer to join the team?
Not necessarily. You do need to be able to swim one entire lap, ½ lap on your back and tread water for 30 seconds.
How do I know what I swim at the meets?
The line-up and who is swimming each event will be posted at the meet in the team area.
When can I go home from a meet?
Like all sports, we want you to stay for the entire meet and cheer for your team mates. See your coaches after each event that you swim so they can give you some feedback on how you are doing.
Where can I find driving directions to the away swim meets?
Directions for all swim meets can be found on the 7 Hill League web site: www.7hillsleague.org or on our site here.
